Canva Connect: Canva Template Guidelines for Bold, Italics and Unbold Text in a Single Text Box
Prevent bold styling errors by formatting text boxes correctly in Canva
When creating templates for use with Canva Connect, it's essential that text elements are correctly formatted to ensure smooth and consistent generation when imported into Properti. Incorrect formatting — especially hidden bolding, italics, or mixed text styling — can result in unexpected visual issues during autofill or drag-and-drop content insertion.
Common issue: unexpected bold or italic text on import
This issue is not caused by Canva Connect Autofill APIs, but rather by how the Canva App handles template formatting — particularly when text elements contain mixed styles.
In some templates, phone numbers or other text fields appear in bold or italics after importing. This is typically due to a bolded or italicised space or invisible character at the beginning of the text element.
Because Canva allows individual characters within a text box to be styled differently, even a single bolded or italicised space can apply that styling to the entire autofilled content when using drag-and-drop or dynamic fields.
How to fix the formatting
To correct this:
-
Unlock the affected text element (e.g. phone number).
-
Select the entire text box, including any leading spaces or invisible characters.
-
Toggle either bold or italics on, then off to remove any hidden formatting.
-
Confirm that the entire element is plain text, with no residual bolding or italics — even on invisible characters.
-
Once the element is clean, apply bold or italics styling only to the text that requires it — avoid applying it to the entire field unless intentional.
