Instagram Collaborators and User Tagging

This article outlines the current capabilities and limitations of tagging users and adding collaborators to Instagram posts when using the Properti.AI platform.

📋 Feature Availability

Feature Feed & Reels Posts Stories Notes
User Tags (on image/video) ✅ Supported ❌ Not supported May occasionally fail due to post-level issues.
Collaborators ✅ Supported (requires manual acceptance) ❌ Not supported Expected Instagram behaviour – tags only show after acceptance.
@Mentions in Captions ✅ Supported ✅ Supported Should display normally unless there’s a unique post-level issue.

✅ Feed & Reels Support

  • User Tags (on the image or video content) are supported via the Instagram API and should show on Feed and Reels posts.

    • If user tags aren’t visible, it's likely a one-off issue with that particular post — not a platform-wide bug.

  • Collaborator Tags require the tagged user to manually accept the invite within their Instagram app before appearing.

    • This is expected Instagram behaviour, not a Properti or system limitation.

  • @Mentions in Captions (e.g. “Video by @nira.creative”) should work consistently.

    • If not visible, this is likely a post-specific anomaly — not something caused by the platform or Automations.

❌ Stories Limitations

  • Instagram does not currently allow user tagging or collaborators in Stories via any third-party platform.

  • @Mentions in captions of Stories (added manually via Instagram) work as expected but cannot be automated via Properti.

❓ FAQs

Q: Why didn’t the user tag show up?
A: This may be a one-off issue with the post itself. Tagging is supported on Feed/Reels, and we’ve seen it work in most cases.

Q: Why doesn’t the collaborator show as tagged?
A: They’ll only appear once they accept the invite manually via their Instagram app. This is how Instagram’s system is designed.

Q: My @mentions aren’t showing in the caption — is that normal?
A: No, mentions in captions generally work. If they didn’t appear, it’s likely a post-specific bug — not something platform-wide or consistent.

Q: Will user tagging in Stories be supported later on?
A: Once Instagram updates their API to allow tagging in Stories, we plan to enable it on Properti.

💡 Best Practices & Recommendations

  •  Use correct, public Instagram handles when tagging or mentioning.

  •  If tags don’t show, try tagging users manually after posting.

  •  Remind collaborators to accept the tag in their app so it appears publicly.

  •  Use @mentions in captions when possible — they’re the most consistent and visible tag type.

  •  Stories tagging via automation is not yet available due to Instagram API limitations.
